Andrew Sullivan's quote of the day:

"For a simple and compelling reason, traditional marriage has been the norm in every political community for 5,000 years." - Senator Orrin Hatch, National Review. Hatch is a Mormon.

  • This whole reverence for the history of marriage is such a canard anyway. Marriage has become how it is only recently, and only in the west. Marriage used to be to combine families, end fueds, produce royal heirs, combine business interests, and other nonsense completely unrlated to love and stability. many cultures did and do have arranged marriages in which the people involved have no say. Many cultures (including Mr. Hatch's) did and do practice polygamy. Many cultures allow easy quick divorces. Some require only to day the word three times.

That is your long historical history of marriage as the pillar of society.

This is not to say that marriage is bad. Mine is going quite well, thank you very much. But simply stating that "marriage has always been between a man and woman throughout recorded history" is vague naive.

This argument is made worse by the fact that it accomodates forced polygamist marriages before it accomodates free homosexual ones.
