CBS to viewing public: Take our word for it.

Dan Rather publicly defended his probably bogus documents today on CNN, so writes Matt Drudge:

DAN RATHER, CBS NEWS ANCHOR: I know that this story is true. I believe that the witnesses and the documents are authentic. We wouldn't have gone to air if they would not have been. There isn't going to be -- there's no -- what you're saying apology?

QUESTION: Apology or any kind of retraction or...

RATHER: Not even discussed, nor should it be. I want to make clear to you, I want to make clear to you if I have not made clear to you, that this story is true, and that more important questions than how we got the story, which is where those who don't like the story like to put the emphasis, the more important question is what are the answers to the questions raised in the story, which I just gave you earlier.

It's more important for questions to be answered even if the questions are stupid. So says Dan Rather. This is unbelievable. His defense is that we should just take media organizations at their word, without any critical analysis. Because if Dan Rather believes it, it must be true. No one question Dan Rather.

Here is an important question Dan. If Powerline can debunk your story over the course of an afternoon, how hard would it be for you to use your 5 minutes on CNN (or better yet, your half hour on CBS) to answer some of the criticism? What handwriting/typing experts looked at it? Are they more credible than this guy? Who did you get it from? Why haven't you cited any sources?

But Dan just says that we should trust him, and that CBS will not investigate this.

Well, maybe that's a good thing. After all, they don't seem to be very good at investigating do they?

More at Powerline.
