It's not fair...or is it?

A while back I mentioned that unions help workers get their "fair share;" a reader replied with this:

"i agree that supporting a union does not make you a communist, but what the hell does wanting a "fair share" mean? that sounds a lot like wealth redistribution, which is rather socialist/communist "

He got me thinking, but probably not in the way he intended.

The dictionary defines fair as this.
However I define fair as this:

Fairness is a vacuous entity into which people dump socially conditioned belief systems that help to defend philosophical and politcal views.

  • If you go with the "being in accordance with relative merit or significance" definition of fair, you can't help but notice that everyone interprets their own merit to be as high as or higher than everyone else's. Frankly, that just can't be so. Thus, fairness just reflects people's sense of entitlement as generated by their need to feel important. All I know is, my piece of the pie had better be bigger than everyone else's...or I'm gonna pitch a hissy. A.

  • I think I'd rather go to a fair. It's just easier.
