Dane County, making the most out of my tax dollar.

We see our local government officials come up with a lot of silly ideas here in Madison Wisconsin. The Dane County board, for example, thinks it's a good idea to spend $25,000 of our money on phone cards for prisoners. I found this Wisconsin State Journal editorial in favor of the plan rather cute.

"This is a good idea. Researchers agree that inmates who maintain family and community ties while in the joint are less likely to resume a life of crime once they are released. The free cards also would ease the burden of a related and equally controversial deal that levies exorbitant collect-call charges on inmates - allowing the county to make a profit off prisoners. The cards would let inmates make direct calls - rather than the more expensive collect calls - to family and friends."

These researchers don't seem to have much info on why those of us that aren't criminals should have to pay for their family and community ties while in "the joint." And WHY ARE WE SO CONCERNED WITH EASING THE BURDEN ON PRISONERS? They're PRISONERS!!! We should do all we can to make some money off of them. Sadly, we're nowhere near making a profit off of prisoners as the article suggests.

  • Maybe they should just turn Dane County jail into a labor camp so they'd really turn a profit.

  • Prisoners do have jobs. It would be nice if we could use some of that manpower to alleviate the cost of prisons. They certainly don't need us to buy them phone cards. That's a luxury that they do not deserve.

  • We do use the manpower. Many jails charge for the privilage of work release. Walworth County jail, for example, charges $200 per week for work release. I'm not in favor of the phone cards, I just think a prisoner shouldn't have to labor if he/she doesn't want to; they're already in jail.
