The Great Wahle is no more.
Mike Wahle is now a Carolina Panther. Perhaps the most valuable Packer player last year, Wahle will help solidify a middling offensive line on what should be a Super Bowl contender next year.
Here is my question. As Wahle was clearly the Packers' most important free agent, why did they franchise Bubba Franks? I though that it was a curious move when they made it, and now I think it was just plain stupid. I'm sure that the salary cap had something to do with it, but I would gladly sacrifice Franks and Rivera to keep Wahle. Next season may be a long season.

I think the reason that they couldn't franchise Mike Wahle is that he was under contract and they had to release him in order to avoid a huge bonus.

You're absolutely right. That completely slipped my mind. I still find it hard to believe that Bubba was the best option for the franchise tag, but now I have to go go looking. Was Marco a free agent or was he in Wahle's situation too?
