War of the Worlds

Chris at the L&N Line has an early review of the new Spielberg/Crazy Tom film:

Well, now I can say, "Fuck Star Wars Episode III." This film BLOWS that space opera away--Spielberg turning the screws on Lucas, the longtime friends and co-accused of destroying cinema as we know it. It's like 1977 again--both directors coming out with similar genre films (Star Wars Episode IV and Close Encounters of the Third Kind), only Lucas created his own universe, whereas Spielberg focuses on the suspense of alien creatures coming to our own world (and he later continued this with the little-seen film E.T.--yeah, I ain't heard of it either).

  • I just hope that they don't screw up the ending. While the 1953 WotW took serious liberties with the original ending (as well as the way that the alien ships transported themselves) with its overly sappy and religious nature, it still was probably the most plausible way for the infinitely out gunned and smarted humans to win.

I guess even if they did change it, ANYTHING is better than the lame ass "computer virus" in Independence Day, which was basically a WotW remake anyway..

  • This is just a guess, but my gut feeling is that the humans will lose in WOTW. The germ thing made some sense back in the days of the horse and carriage, as the memories of large swathes of people being wiped out by disease was still commonplace. I just don't find that ending plausible anymore. The only plausible ending is that we lose.

But maybe Spielberg will surprise me.

  • This post gives my great hope. I heard that the movie would be terrible because they didn't release it to critics early enough or something like that.

My hope is that Tom Cruise challenges the head Alien to a sword fight, and wins. Thus the aliens are honor-bound to leave. Speaking of which, I think we should incorporate duels into foreign policy. That way, smaller countries who hate us will at least respect us when we defeat their champion. If we lose, oh well, they probably will ask for us to come back soon enough. They wouldn't all have to be with swords, pistols (the old breach loaders though) bowie knife fights with the fighters' left hands tied to the opponents hand, bo-staffs, etc would also work.)
