Fun Friday, Part 3

This ranks as one of my favorite Green Bay Packer plays of all time. It was a rainy, windy, cold Monday Night which caused the Minnesota kicker (I believe Gary Anderson) to miss a chippy for the win, forcing overtime. It took about two weeks for my dad and I to warm up after this game, but it was worth it to see this:

  • One crazy thing about that freeman catch is that the refs made the right call.

  • The other crazy thing is that you can tell, when Dennis Miller sheepishly says "yes," that he realized Freeman caught it before Al Michaels or Dan Fouts did. I always thought Dennis Miller's biggest problem was that he didn't have enough confidence -- he sometimes noticed stuff like that but didn't seem to want to say anything because he thought people would tell him to shut up about football because he's just a comedian.

  • Couldn't agree more. This play is a microcosm of everything that was wrong with that broadcasting team. Dennis Miller saw what was going on but didn't want to get in the way of the two knowlegeable guys, while Fouts and Michaels step all over each other trying to figure what was going on. Worst of all, Fouts figures it out while Michaels is still unsure and keeps talking over him. Miller was victimized first by his lack of confidence, but also by the battling between Fouts and Michaels. He never had a chance.

One reason I think that Kornheiser will work is that no one is afraid to disagree with Theisman. Doing so almost assures that you won't look stupid.

  • If anything, I'm worried that ESPN is going to tell Kornheiser to tone things down because he's going to make it clear that the commentary provided by Theisman -- and most of the other ex-jocks on ESPN's payroll -- is utterly inane.
