Anecdote Of The Day

A Scandinavian economist once proudly said to free-market advocate Milton Friedman, "In Scandinavia we have no poverty." And Milton Friedman replied, "That's interesting, because in America among Scandinavians, we have no poverty, either."

-P.J. O'Rourke, in Eat The Rich

  • I don't get it.

    Poverty is race based?
Is that the joke? Or am I seriously missing something

  • Culture, actually. His point was that Scandinavian culture, and not socialism, is responsible for Scandinavian prosperity. See: Minnesota.

  • How do you know he didn't think it was genetic though?

  • It is too cold to live in a cardboard box in either Scandinavia or Minnesota.

  • Anon, because I read the entire book.

  • Does he attribute black poverty in America to the remnants of post-slavery culture (being told what to do), or trace it back to the African cultures then?

  • I blame rap music.

  • First anon, are you saying that you attribute black poverty to capitalism? I don't get your question in the context of socialism vs. capitalism against the backdrop of culture--which is what I take this quotation to be referring to. And aren't post-slavery culture and African culture [and rap music actually] both things that have shaped current black American culture? I don't think PJ's point has as much to do with the source of culture as it does to do with the effect of culture. But I havn't read it either.

  • I think second anon got it about right. What do you say to that first anon? I'm really curious as to why, to you, the cause of black culture is relevant to a quote about the effect of scandanavian culture in different economic models.
