Peter King, on the Green Bay-Washington Officials

From today's MMQB:

Goats of the Week

Referee Terry McAulay's crew at Green Bay-Washington, for an overall poor job and costing the Packers two legitimate touchdowns. First, there was a pathetic holding call on right tackle Mark Tauscher, negating one Favre touchdown pass; there was nothing close to a hold on the play. Last year, the officials were told not to call offensive holding unless it was something an official actually saw. Well, there's no way an official saw holding on Tauscher. Never happened. Then, a second Packers TD throw was negated when Bubba Franks cleanly caught a pass in the corner of the end zone with one foot down before getting driven out of the end zone by Washington cornerback Fred Smoot. Incomplete. Insane.

  • I totally agree. I couldn't believe that the force out of Franks wasn't challenged. Is that a "challengeable" call?

  • The force out is not challengeable...but it should be. If you watched the Dallas/NE game Terrell Owens had the same thing happen to him (although they scored on the next play.)

It definitely needs to be changed and here is why. On the Owens play he was clearly forced out and it looked like he only got one foot down however, the linesman ruled it a catch BUT NOT a force out. So, NE simply challenged the fact that he didn't get both feet down (which he clearly didn't) and the play was reversed...no catch. It's actually quite the Catch-22 (no pun intended.) Think about it...the linesman rules a catch because as he sees it Owens got both feet down...thus, their is no need to rule a force out. If he had simply ruled a force out it goes as reception and no challenge.

The really interesting thing is in nearly every situation I can remember where a receiver gets one foot down while being even at least slightly shoved out of bounds the ref will usually call a force out. It worked on the Oleson touchdown last week against the Bears (at least I think that was the play) and more memorably...the Nate Poole reception from 2003 when the Cardinals beat the Vikings.

Just my $.02...and thanks to Paul for updating the Electric Commentary.

  • Update:

I can't find a link to the article but I read earlier in the week that the NFL's supervisor of officials admitted that the officials blew the call regarding Bubba Franks TD catch. Not that it matters, of course, but still it's always nice to be right.
